Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin 21st Overall to Kansas City Chiefs

NFL Draft 2011: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin 21st Overall to Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City’s needs:
  1. Wide Receiver
  2. Right Tackle
  3. Nose Tackle
  4. Inside Linebacker
  5. Outside Linebackers
Gabe Carimi is who again?
By the numbers:
Age: 22
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 314
2010 Stats: Started 13 games at left tackle.
Career Stats Started 47 games at left tackle.
By the word:
Carimi lacks the type of foot quickness that typifies successful NFL left tackles (this wasn’t a problem at Wisconsin as they were extremely run oriented), but he is tough to overpower and an absolutely dominator in the running game. He projects as a fringe LT, but a stud RT.
Why Carimi is the pick:
The Chiefs could use a receiver, but 21 is a little jigh for Jonathan Baldwin, Torrey Smith, Titus Young—so they turn their attention to the offensive line.
Castonzo is the best pure left tackle on the board, but Carimi is the best prospect overall, and for that reason I think they opt for the Badger.
Who else was considered:
1. Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor — Kansas City’s defense improved by leaps and bounds last year, and they could do so again by upgrading from Ron Edwards at the nose tackle. Taylor is the best NT in this draft, and would make life a heck of a lot easier for the Chiefs’ LBs (whoever they may end up being).
2. Brooks Reed, DE, Arizona — The Chiefs would love to grab a 3-4 OLB to complement (and/or replace) Tamba Hali, and Brooks Reed is one of the hottest names in the draft.
3. Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia — Houston was last month’s Brooks Reed—a sizeable 3-4 OLB prospect, a little raw but loaded with potential.
4. Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College — The Chiefs could use a RT even more than a left, but by no means does that preclude Castonzo, probably the best overall tackle left on the board, from getting consideration.
5. Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State — Ibid. Sherrod isn’t quite as much of a sure thing as Castonzo is, but he has the potential to be a more successful pro. Sherrod needs to add strength, but he has the makings of an elite NFL pass blocker.

Sabarimala authorities say ‘divine light’ is man-made

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala’s newfound rationalism has claimed the state’s spiritual USP — the annual glimmer that attracts lakhs of pilgrims from all over India to the hill shrine of Sabarimala.
After a family of tantrics attached to the forest shrine hinted that the glimmer, Makara Vilakku, was man-made, temple affairs minister G Sudhakaran and Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president CK Guptan have revealed that the divine light was indeed of profane origin. But they said that it cannot be confused with Makara Jyoti, a star that appears on Makara Sankranthi day along with the Makara Vilakku.
On Tuesday, Sabarimala tantri Kandararu Mohanaru, said in a statement that some people were confusing Makara Vilakku with Makara Jyothi. He said that the Makara Jyothi was a star while Makara Vilakku was a ritualistic light linked to the legend of Parasurama. He said the tribesmen still light Makara Vilakku at Ponnambalamedu every year.
“Makara Vilakku is man-made. The government cannot do anything to stop it. But not everything can be explained by rationalism,” Sudhakaran said. Lakhs of pilgrims throng Sabarimala every January to witness three glitters on the next hill. Though critics have been trying to shatter the myth with explanations ranging from celestial alignment to government-sponsored conspiracies, Ayyappa devotees blindly worshipped the light.
“The TDB has no role in lighting Makara Vilakku. It happens on a hill far from the temple. The board has never advertised that the light was a miracle,” Guptan said.
The tantric was forced to comment on the issue after the former president of TDB, which manages the Sri Dharma Sastha Temple, said the light was lit by officials. “The devaswom board has been functioning with the help of the police and other departments. The Makara Vilakku is also done with the police and other people,” G Raman Nair told a television channel.

Sharks Vs. Kings, Final Score: San Jose Advances To Second Round With 4-3 OT Win

Sharks die if they don’t keep moving forward. The San Jose Sharks are still alive.
Joe Thornton scored 2:22 into overtime, as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3, in Game 6 to advance to the conference semifinals.
The second-seeded Sharks bounced back from Saturday’s 3-1 loss to win this Western Conference quarterfinal series 4-2.
Kings goalie Jonathan Quick opened the game with 16 saves in the first quarter and ended the game with 31.
Antti Niemi made 26 saves for the Sharks, who are trying to embark on another deep playoff run after making it to the conference finals a year ago. San Jose was swept by Chicago in the third round last year.

Prithviraj Marries Supriya Menon BBC Journalist

Malayalam super star Prithviraj Monday tied the knot with his childhood journalist friend Supriya Menon at a private function here.
"Just 30 people took part in the marriage ceremony. We decided to have a purely personal affair because in our family there are very aged people and they wanted it to be a solemn function, and hence we decided to make it a very private affair," Prithivraj's mother, actress Mallika Sukumaran, told media persons outside a resort, near the bride's residence here.

Denying it was a secret affair, she said: "They have been childhood friends and we have known each other for a very long time and there was nothing secretive in this."

Supriya is the lone daughter of Vijay Kumar Menon and Padmaja residing at Mumbai. Born in Kerala, she done her schooling from Mumbai and later her graduation in journalism from University of London. She joined BBC in 2007, after working for many famous National TV channels and concentrates on rural reporting.

Prithviraj who commented in many interviews earlier about beautiful girls who doesn't match his intellectual levels is said to have been attracted to the intellect of the lady who is a hardworking journalist.

Prithvi's fans and admirers are indeed surprised why their favourite actor has maintained so much suspense and mystery over his marriage. Reports are that the bride and groom will hold a special reception on the first of May at Le Meridian hotel, Kochi, where the distinguished members of the public and film fraternity will be invited.

The 28-year-old actor made a successful debut with "Nandanam" and has starred in more than 50 films, including blockbusters like "Swapnakoodu" (2003), "Classmates" (2006), "Thirakkatha" (2008) and "Urumi" (2011).

Sachin Tendulkar Pays Respect To Sathya Sai Baba

Thousands of devotees, including celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, paid their last respects to spiritual leader Sathya Sai Babawho died here on Sunday.

Thirty-eight-year-old Tendulkar skipped his birthday celebrations yesterday to mourn the death of Sai Baba, who battled multiple-organ failure before breathing his last at 85 years of age.

The iconic batsman was accompanied by his wife Anjali during his visit to the Sai Kulwant Hall in Prashanti Nilayam here. The couple was moved to tears upon arriving at the hall where they sat for a while before driving off.

The Baba's body has been kept here for two days for his millions of devotees to pay their last respects.

Born as Sathyanarayana Raju in a humble backward caste family on November 23, 1926, Baba emerged as one of the most popular godmen in India in modern times.

Initially he attracted attention through acts like producing articles like sacred ash and 'lingam' which his detractors claimed was a sleight of hand, but later he came to be known for his founding institutions of learning and philanthropy.

Baba, who considered himself a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi, was hospitalised on March 28 following problems related to heart and respiration and had been lying critical following multi-organ failure.

Surviving on ventilator support, his kidneys stopped functioning and his health suffered deterioration a few days ago when his liver also stopped functioning.

The Sai Baba leaves a big empire estimated from a conservative figure of Rs40,000 crore to a staggering Rs1.5 lakh crores raising questions over who will manage the Trust.

"It's better than me giving him lessons. Although I can now bowl by the way," added Hurley.
